Jewelry Care Guide
The Tsiropoulos Jewelry Care Guide: Sustaining Brilliance for Generations
THE ART OF PRESERVATION
DAILY RITUALS
The foundation of jewelry longevity is consistent, mindful daily care.
• First On, Last Off. Always dress before putting on your jewelry. Cosmetics, perfumes and hairsprays contain chemicals that gradually dull gemstones and weaken gold alloys.
• The Evening Wipe. After every wear, gently clean each piece with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove skin oils, perspiration and residue.
• Listen and Look. Periodically hold your piece close and listen for faint rattling — a sign that a stone may have shifted. Visually inspect settings monthly.
ESSENTIAL CAUTIONs
What you avoid is as important as what you do.
• Chemical Exposure. Chlorine, bleach, ammonia and abrasive household cleaners are enemies of fine jewelry. Remove all pieces before swimming, cleaning or applying beauty products.
• Physical Activity. Remove rings and bracelets before the gym, gardening, cooking or any manual work. Impact and friction are the leading causes of prong damage.
• Never Self-Repair. Do not attempt to adjust prongs, re-polish settings or tighten stones yourself. Always entrust repairs to a certified specialist.
AT-HOME CLEANING BY MATERIAL
DIAMONDS & GOLD
Soak in warm, dye-free soapy water for 15–30 minutes. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently clean the pavilion — the back of the setting — where dirt accumulates and blocks light. Rinse in a separate bowl of clean warm water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
PEARLS
Never soak pearls. Wipe gently with a damp cloth after every wear. Have the string professionally re-strung every two to three years, or sooner if you notice slack. Store flat — never hanging — to prevent thread stretching.
STERLING SILVER
Silver tarnishes naturally through air exposure. Use a dedicated silver polishing cloth — never paper towels or abrasive materials. For deeper tarnish, a specialist silver cleaning solution applied with a soft cloth will restore brilliance. Store in an anti-tarnish pouch when not in use.
RARE GEMSTONES (Sapphires, Rubies, Emeralds)
Warm soapy water and a soft brush are safe for sapphires and rubies. Emeralds require extra caution — many are treated with oils that can be stripped by harsh cleaning. Use only lukewarm water and avoid ultrasonic cleaners entirely for emeralds. When in doubt, bring them to us.
OPALS & SOFT STONES
Opals are among the most delicate gemstones. Never expose to sudden temperature changes, dry air or direct sunlight for extended periods. Clean only with a barely damp cloth and store separately in a padded pouch.
PROFESSIONAL CARE
Home care preserves. Professional care protects.
We recommend a professional inspection every 12 months — more frequently for pieces worn daily such as engagement rings and wedding bands. During your appointment, our certified gemologists will:
• Examine all prong settings and clasps under magnification
• Professionally ultrasonically clean your piece to restore full brilliance
• Inspect for micro-fractures or stone movement invisible to the naked eye
• Provide a written condition report for insurance purposes
Annual professional care is not a luxury — it is the single most effective way to prevent stone loss and preserve the value of your investment.
STORAGE
How you store your jewelry when you are not wearing it matters as much as how you wear it.
• Store each piece individually in its original box, a soft pouch or a fabric-lined compartment.
• Never allow pieces to touch. Diamonds will scratch gold, pearls and softer gemstones.
• Keep jewelry away from direct sunlight, humidity and extreme temperature changes.
• For travel, use a dedicated jewelry roll with individual compartments — never loose in a bag.
